~ Is The
Samoyed The Right Breed For You? ~
So, you think
you would like to "have" a Samoyed because you think they are a
beautiful dog? Well, you are correct, they are beautiful!
However, the responsibility of owning a Samoyed is much more involved
than exterior beauty, human impulsive wants or similar reasons.
The decision to own a Samoyed, as with any animal, should involve
the entire family. Please do thorough research prior, talk to as
many Samoyed owners or breeders as you can about the Samoyed, pro's and
con's, and be
realistic. To obtain a list of Samoyed breeders in your area to ask

Temperament and Training Insights |
The Samoyed is...a good natured medium
sized breed, who loves people. They are a family and people
oriented breed, who demand to be with their people inside or
where ever their people happen to be at any given time.
The affectionate Samoyed will be your friend for life! If you are looking for a dog to put out in the backyard to greet
as time permits you are looking into the wrong breed. An
ignored Sammie equals a bored Sammie resulting in behavioral
problems. The Samoyed is a wonderful breed for children.
They are a highly intelligent breed, which is sometimes confused
with disobedience or stubbornness when it comes to obedience or
other types of training. You can look into the eyes of the
Sammie and know the lights are on...they make decisions. The
best way to train the happy and fun loving Samoyed is with a lot
of patience, praise and consistency much like you would do with your human
children. The Samoyed is a vocal dog, who will bark or sing
(arhoo). Some are diggers and chewers, especially as
puppies. |

Description |
The Samoyed is...a compact muscular
working dog who is dignified possessing beauty and grace.
The Samoyed is...one of the few Natural breeds. They were the only Nordic breed to have lived in the reindeer
tents with their people, who they kept warm. They do well in
a pack or as a solely owned dog. The Samoyed is a double
coated breed with a softer undercoat and a harsher standoffish
outer coat. The Samoyed coat can be either white, cream or
biscuit or a combination of any of the three. Any color
other than listed or blue eyes are disqualifications in the
Samoyed.

Living Arrangements |
The Samoyed is...a dog who requires a
secure fenced yard (6-8' preferred) to run and play in; however,
they also do well in apartments provided the owner is willing to
put forth the extra effort to exercise and potty adequately
(always on lead). |

Weather |
The Samoyed is...,in spite of what you
may have heard, a breed who does well in all elements. While
they prefer the cooler climates; the Samoyed acclimates well to
the warmer climates. We are in Texas! Their dual coat
protects them in cold and heat. You will just need to use
the common sense approach as it applies to the heat and humidity
factors. The Samoyed is less active during the summer months
and will want to go outside to potty and back into the air
conditioned home. They will tend to want to play mostly
outside in the summer months in the very early morning hours or
the late night hours. They do get their exercise indoors too. |

|
|
Protection |
The Samoyed is not...a watchdog.
They will bark to alert you to someone coming or at the door;
however, due to their wonderful temperament they would lick and
greet a stranger instead of bite them, grin. Samoyeds have
been known to alert and save their family members from house
fires, seizures, etc. |
| |
|
|
Shedding |
The Samoyed is not...a non-shedding
breed. Can we say Hair, Hair Everywhere! The shedding
can be minimized with regular grooming. |
| |
|
|
Living Arrangements |
The Samoyed is not...an outdoor living
dog. While the Samoyed loves the outdoors they are happiest
and less bored when they are with their humans. |
| |
|
The Samoyed has been called for many years
the dog that carries Christmas in its face and heart the whole
year long.
